Abstract

In the American territories conquered by the Iberian powers the production of stories about the past is history as far back to the work of the chroniclers and historians of the eighteenth century Creoles. But it was in the nineteenth century when there was, in the context of the newly independent states, the emergence of Latin American historiography stricto sensu. His analysis helps to know, from a comparative perspective, the processes of emergence and consolidation of the studies and historical research, as well as the contribution of the discipline in the respective definition of social imaginary, especially the nationalists.
