Abstract

The Brazilian Independence process occurred in 1822 required the intelligentsia of the newly formed nation the challenge of thinking and build their history unrelated to the designs of Portugal. Two spaces and gave birth radiated knowledge about the Brazilian history: the Pedro II College (1837) and the Historical and Geographic Institute (1838). In that context Joaquim Manuel de Macedo wrote the work Lessons of History of Brazil (1861) showing a method to teach and study the history homeland. I propose this reflection dialogue with Brazilian teaching history in the nineteenth century from the Lessons of Macedo work and taking as a guideline the Paraguayan War-related content.
